Before You Look Ahead, Look Back
This month HERO is discussing the theme, “Next.” While Ps Matt and others will be teaching on what’s next, I want to take a minute to look at this topic from a slightly different perspective. It is important to look ahead and plan for the future, but you cannot move forward until you have let go of your past. Whether thinking about your past brings you joy or pain, regret or pride, you have to let it go if you want to grow beyond it.
In Philippians 3, the Apostle Paul talks about this very topic. He tells us to forget what’s behind and look ahead to the goal God has set for your future. Paul had a reputable past, but he was ashamed of it. He was a highly educated religious man, which was something to be proud of. However, he also caused the deaths of many Christians, which was something he regretted very much.
What about you? Are you proud of every decision you’ve made or do you have a few regrets? Either way, you can’t live in the past. It’s time to move forward. It’s time to let God take you to what is next for you. Living in the past will only hinder what God has planned for you. It will stunt your spiritual growth.
So before you ask or answer the million dollar question: "I have an idea of where God wants to take me, but what do I do next to get there?" Ask yourself this, “Am I stuck in the past afraid to move forward?” Because the answer to the first question won’t matter until you answer the second. This is important! Don’t just pass over this; think about it before you answer. If you are living in the past, ask God to help you get unstuck and He will show you how to do so! I Dare You!
